Food Biography
EM (Ema) Beck has been a foodie nearly all of her life, ever since she made banana bread from a recipe in her Sesame Street encyclopedia with her mom at age four. Since then, there's been a long period of appreciating food and not knowing much about cooking, to getting really into some spectacular cooking messes and finally, something edible. Really, it's incredible to get to the edible part of the cycle.
Professionally, Em is an artist and published author. But most of the time, she's a lover of kitchen gadgets of all time (seriously, the garlic slicer will save your life), and good at knowing how much liquid a cup of water is without needing a measuring cup. She loves food, making things (food or otherwise), writing and taking pictures. A food blog was a natural step for someone so inclined towards tasty things and photos.
A note about this blog: Very few recipes will have nuts other than almonds and cashews. There's an allergy that's potent and has to be minded.
Professional Bio
Em opened Rains on the Plain to sell Fine art prints and paintings in 2009. After an extended hiatus for a chaotic life (getting married, buying a house, etc), Rains on the Plain reopened in 2012 with a store on the popular art website Society6.
Before focusing on art, she worked in Administrative, Payroll and Human Resources positions, none of which were very interesting. Prior to that, she served two years in Americorps National Service as a volunteer.
Her photographic work was displayed at Karlsson Fine Art in Avon, CT from September 2009 - March 2010, when the gallery closed. Since then, her paintings and prints have found homes in many private collections and through her store have found their way onto iPhone cases and laptop skins. Besides working in photography, she enjoys making digital art renderings of space and nebulae, painting in various mediums (mainly pastel and watercolor) and writing.
She shoots on a Canon EOS Rebel T3 currently, but older work was done with a Pentax K100D. She also uses film on occasion, preferring the Holga and lomography cameras, but also has a film Nikon. For software, Ema uses Adobe Creative Suite, Photoshop CC, Lightroom 5, Manga Studio and procreate on her iPad.
Ema proudly holds memberships in the following organizations: Professional Photographers of America (PPA), Photographic Society of America (PSA), International Association of Astronomical Artists (IAAA) and local arts organizations.
She spends her off time with her husband, revitalizing her old house, running, crocheting, reading and playing video games.
